Day 13

CODEBREAKER

Today has been a busy day. My other half and I decided to go to Felixstowe, and visit Landguard Fort and Felixstowe Museum. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but never got round to it. Until now. Landguard Fort was really interesting, and it’s given me a start on my Codebreaker Badge. There was a room where you could send morse code messages to another person, and they could send messages back.

And then there was another area where you could send messages via semaphore flags.

So I can now spend some time trying to learn these!

Frankie Goes To Felixstowe

Upon arrival at Felixstowe Museum, we were given a guide and told that there was an exhibition celebrating the 80s, which excited me because I grew up in the 80s, and in all honesty, it is the best decade - not that I’m biased or anything. 

The room was floor to ceiling 80s; an absolute smorgasbord of neon, chunky technology, and cheaply made plastic trinkets. I was transported back to my childhood home, listening to Kylie Minogue, watching Big, and playing with Care Bears. The toys were the best part. Both myself and my other half let out an excited scream - it wasn’t too loud - when we saw a couple of A-Team figures. My other half has two sets of the exact same thing! 

We then turned the corner and found computers set up with Pac Man and Space Invaders, so obviously we had to play those games. Frustratingly, other people wanted to play those games too. But if they hadn’t been there, I know we wouldn’t have left for days!

There was so much to take in and so many memories unlocked, which leads to my two criticisms of the exhibition. Firstly, I wish there had been more stuff. The 80s is such an iconic decade; so much happened in the world of technology, politics, royalty, music, sport, and film. It felt lacking in some respects. However, the volunteer on duty told us that everything had been donated, so people can only donate the things they have. And my second criticism is about the size of the room. The room was too small. I know this can’t be helped, they can only work with what they have. But I felt like I couldn’t absorb everything without being moved on quickly by the people behind us. 

I would definitely recommend this exhibition. It took me back to my childhood as soon as I stepped through the door, and we couldn’t stop smiling the whole time we were in there.

The Felixstowe Museum costs £4 to get in, but we bought a combined ticket for there and Landguard Fort, which saved us £1.30. Both are well worth a visit.

Still no hooping today, far too busy. But I did manage to walk 16,520 steps so I’m happy with that.
